What is an AWB number and how is it generated?

Modified on Wed, 3 Sep at 3:04 PM

An AWB number (Air Waybill Number) is a unique tracking number assigned to a shipment by a courier or logistics partner. It acts as a tracking number for the shipment throughout its journey and is used to track the package’s status, movement, and delivery.

How is an AWB Generated?

The AWB is generated when a shipment is created in the courier’s system. Through Clickpost, this happens when the courier’s order creation API is triggered, and the AWB is then registered on Clickpost.

Ways AWBs are Shared

  • Real-time via API – The courier generates and shares the AWB instantly when the order is created.

  • Pre-assigned AWBs – Some couriers allow pre-generated AWBs. These can be uploaded and managed on the Clickpost dashboard and are passed in the courier’s order creation request payload.
